I am learning a lot about blogs in lesson 2.

The RSS feeds is a big one. I knew I could sign up to receive emails through rss but I did not know that there were sites that managed all the blogs a person may sign up for. It makes sense  to organize it that way. I wondered how people keep track of all this stuff. Now I know.

Also, several years ago I had a bunch of friends who were blogging about various things. Mostly Alaska wilderness trekking and packrafting, etc. Seems like they all dropped it all of a sudden a few years back. Is that because Facebook became so popular? Or do many people start blogs for the novelty of it and then just lose interest over time.

Any thoughts?

I think a lot of people start blogging without a clear direction, purpose, and/or intended audience.  There are many kinds of social media outlets: blogs, facebook, twitter, etc.  People are left to figure out for themselves which outlet will fit, and sometimes it's a process of trial and error.  For example, I wonder if your friends found that Facebook or some other media outlet was a better fit for what they were communicating on their blogs.  The other thing about blogs is that ANYONE can make one, so if a blog doesn't have any reliable links or organizational connections, who will bother to look at it?  And if nobody bothers to look at it, then why keep blogging?

For an example of the kind of blogs I like to check out myself, as a CTE teacher, here is a link:http://blog.aeseducation.com/

Thanks for posting the questions!

I started a blog in 2010 with the strict purpose of posting homework assignments for my classes. I'd start each blog entry with the date and a silly quote, then proceed to enter the assignment for the specific class. The entry for the first day of school had a link to a particular class syllabus.

I stopped using the blog because of the new (at the time) online grading system my school purchased. It gave me the ability to do what my blog did without the "fluff" of adding pictures, reading my intro, etc. It then became a hassle to enter assignments on the blog and the grading program. I also took a poll of my classes and found that no one really followed it, probably because it lacked the "fluff" kids look for on websites.
